Soot Snail (煤マイマイ Susumaimai) is a volcanic mollusk beast found in Ashen Blaze Island's Black Canyon. They can often be found roaming the less hot regions of the canyon.
Anatomy[]
Soot Snail bears resemblance to an exotic kind of snail. It is of entirely very dark grey color, left for the bottom part of its body, which bears dark orange color. Its body has thick skin covered in countless cracks, which often form lines that decorate it. It has two eyes and one pair of thick tentacles on its head. Its trochiform shell is black, and bears numerous cracks that reveal glowing orange insides. The apex of its shell ends with an open hole facing the direction of its head.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being able to survive Black Canyon's heat, toxicity and lack of oxygen alone proves great vitality. Its skin is very tough, and its shell is extremely hard to break through, although it does possess weak spots. It is capable of moving on any kind of surface, be it ground, a wall, or even a ceiling. Its sensoric tentacles allow it to detect predators even in the extremely dense smoke and noise of the canyon.
When defending itself, it can obviously hide into its shell and cover its opening with powerful barrier tissue. It also can extend its radula and use it to attack, causing deep lacerations and tearing apart flesh. Most notably, through the usage of the opening in its shell, it can expel large amounts of heavy, extremely adhesive goo, which possesses temperatures of over 1500°C.
As Food[]
Soot Snail is ingredient of great delicacy, possessing most probably the single most delicious meat in the Black Canyon's ecosystem. However, it is a Special Preparation Ingredient, requiring a specific way of capture in order to be edible.
The preparation method seems quite simple, but can prove to be very difficult due to the beast's tenacity. One has to simply pull its head tentacles strongly enough for it to reveal its radula, but not as strongly as to rip them off. When its radula is exposed, the "teeth" on it need to be removed as quickly as possible. A special knife was even created by a well-known knife maker that can easily remove its radula teeth and prepare it safely.
Its flesh is described as of mild, unaggressive flavor and spicy pungence, while the inside of its shell is painfully spicy, on par with the Human World's strongest chilly peppers.
It is possible to prepare it through an unknown method to be pleasantly delicious, as Nua of the Silver Mane has prepared it into Garlic Soot Glowing Escargot.
